Sharp Aquos Review

Model: Sharp LC-52E77U
Description:  1920 X 1080 HD LCD TV
Reviewer: Robert Wiley
Date: Fall 2009
Test and Optimum Viewing Distance: 15 feet
Calibration Notes: The LC-52E77U contains fairly easy to use calibration tools including white balance settings controls without having to access the service menu. The E77U contains a BLUE push that we found difficult to reduce
Below are are final picture settings to bring the user close to D6500 without accessing the service menu:
Picture Settings
Picture Mode User
Color Temp Low
Brightness -12
Contrast +36
Color +1
Tint +1
Sharpness -1
Backlight +6
OPC Off

480i DVD and Broadcast Viewing: As difficult and unpredictable as the E77U series is with calibration, the same applies to the picture experience. At times the LC-52E77U had ultra saturated looking blacks and great contrast. At others the picture appeared washed out during dark scenes. There is a lot of processing going on with this TV at many different levels. The internal picture doctor is hard at work. Therefore we viewed a lot of source material on it to try to get a clear understanding of the strengths and weaknesses. There are motion artifacts of varieties – swimmy effects with side to side jerky motion. At times there is flicker and background noise. In other scenes the presentation looked fantastic, clear, vivid and colorful. The 3D-Y/C feature is available for analog signals and is intended to minimize dot crawl and cross color noise.

LG 47LE8500 Review - 47" LCD LED TV

Model: LG 47LE8500
Description: 47" LCD TV with 240Hz Processing
Resolution: 1980 X 1080
Includes: Swivel table top stand
Reviewers: Robert Wiley and Jack Burden
Date: Summer 2010
The LE8500 is loaded with extra features (some good, some not) and striking good looks. It is the next to highest end TV produced by LG for 2010 falling just below the LE9500 which has the simulated 480Hz rate that I cant imagine makes much difference. We enjoyed testing this high end offering and comment on Picture quality characteristics and almost all of the various features below. We finish with a value comparison rating with the 3 categories combining for the Overall rating.

HD Picture Quality: First and foremost with the LE8500 is adjust the dominant, radioactive TruMotion 240Hz feature. I wish that we could report a big improvement over this feature from last year's models, but it's not to be. With the feature on either high or low setting you will notice soap opera type cardboard cutout figures as the TV's processing works to take out the natural background blur of scenes. The feature's settings are much easier to change this year (see below in features section for instructions). After much testing, we preferred the User setting with Judder Reduction completely off at 0, and Motion Blur at level 9 with the exception of sports programming for which the features actually adds quality. With that done we will report up front that judder is noticeable and persistent especially in scenes with side to side panning. But it's worth the tradoff as the judder reduction option is just too distracting even at level 1.
This is one of the only and major drawbacks to the picture (though a big one). Color rendition from HD signals is superb and black levels excellent. We thoroughly enjoyed the real glass facing of this TV as it helps the picture presentation depth and realism. It does add some glare, but better to have glare and depth as far as we're concerned. Dark shadow detail was good and plenty of light came through during darker scenes.

Two different types of flat screen TV

How to choose the right TV set

Both LCD and plasma can produce beautiful images, but they have different characteristics. One is not necessary better than the other.

It’s a personal preference as to the type of image you want to see, along with the size and cost factor. Compare the two side by side in the store to see what you like best. LCDs screens have a matte finish with minimal reflection.

LCDs have a better image quality and higher resolution at smaller screen sizes than any other display technology and tends to be brighter than plasmas. It has a very realistic look, natural balance, superior color accuracy, good flesh tones, and sharpness.

Digital TV Formats

The screen size for an LCD can vary from 2 inches to 52 inches, and expect screens to be larger than that in the near future. LCDs weigh about half as much as a CRT television with the same size screen. They are popular in places where there is not much space. They can be desk, cabinet or wall mounted.

EZ Tip: We purchased a 42 inch Digital LCD TV . Soon after, we found it on Amazon.com for $300 less. You may want to check prices there before you make your purchase.

General information about all flat screen TVs:
# Almost all flat panel televisions have a widescreen format.
# Many flat panel TVs include a PC input. If you have PIP (picture in a picture), you can watch TV while searching the web!
# Almost all flat panel televisions can display high-definition (HDTV) . Many tube (CRT) televisions cannot.
# The picture is brilliant and easily viewable in all lighting situations.
# They have a wide viewing area and allows for undistorted viewing from most angles.
# They tend to have better audio systems than the old televisions had.
# Flat screen TVs are some of the most expensive video products on the market. At the present time, LCDs are less expensive than Plasma in screen sizes of 50 inches or less. Plasmas are less expensive than LCDs in screen sizes of 50 inches or more.

Panasonic TX-P46VT20B 3D Television

Panasonic TX-P46VT20B review

Anyone interested in 3D is advised to think a little larger than 40-42-inches. Panasonic's 46-inch TX-P46VT20B, therefore, has the potential to be a real winner, especially as it uses 3D-friendly plasma technology.
panasonic-tx-p46vt20b
The VT20 series sits right at the top of Panasonic's consumer TV tree, just above the V series, which offers nearly the same spec as the VT20s, except for 3D readiness. If you want 3D thrills for less money, there's the  which lacks the VT20's Infinite Black Pro technology for enhanced contrast, as well as its built-in subwoofer and supplied USB Wi-Fi stick.

Sony KDL46HX823 and KDL55HX823 3D-capable HDTV sets

Sony KDL46HX823 & KDL55HX823 3D Edge-Lit LED LCD TV To Hit UK In May

The Sony KDL46HX823 and KDL55HX823 3D-capable HDTV sets, featuring edge LED backlight that is paradoxically controlled via local-dimming algorithm, is scheduled to hit UK stores sometime in May later this year. Both the 46- and 55-inchers are members of the HX823 series which is one rung down from the Japanese TV manufacturer’s top-of-the-line HX923 range.
Sony KDL-46HX823
Sony Bravia LCD televisions containing the HX marker fall under the Cinematic Range which puts emphasis on picture quality. To this end, the HX823 LCD TV models are fitted with edge-mounted LEDs, but employs local-dimming video processing which – in theory – allows for more localised and precise backlight control to achieve higher contrast ratio with deeper blacks and brighter whites.
Like every model in the Bravia Cinematic Range, the Sony KDL-46HX823 and KDL-55HX823 sports the X-Reality PRO dual-chip image processing engine. The company claims that this cutting-edge video processor is able to deliver near-HD quality even from web videos and low-resolution images, due in no small part to its 14-bit multi-frame video data analysis and scaling.
UK prices are unknown at this time of writing, but should be announced closer to launch.
